The Los Angeles College Promise (the Promise) is an initiative founded by the L.A. Community College District (LACCD), the Mayor's Fund for L.A., Mayor Eric Garcetti, L.A. Unified School District (LAUSD), and the L.A. Chamber of Commerce. The Promise's aim was to provide a year of free college enrollment to full-time students graduating from LAUSD in 2017. The Promise has since been expanded to provide tuition to all first-time, full-time students attending an LACCD college.
I was excited to brand and design for this groundbreaking program, as it one of the first on the west coast. Since its launch, many other districts have created their own college promise programs, looking at L.A.'s for guidance and inspiration.
LACP logo and signature gradient
I was tasked with designing a logo, visual identity, and collateral for the collaborative effort. Creating a symbol which represents vast areas of L.A. and two of the largest school districts in the world was a challenging exercise.
Something that reaches across the whole city are the colorful L.A. sunsets. Abstracting this concept into a color palette helps communicate "L.A." without using more cliché imagery (like a palm tree, the freeway or the beach).
Style guidelines book and logo variations
Second Lady Jill Biden, Lieutenant Governor (now Governor) Gavin Newsom, and Mayor Erik Garcetti helped kickoff the launch of the Promise.
High-profile officials supporting the event
I designed custom die-struck medallions for students at the LACP 2019 Ceremonial Graduation. These students were honored as the first cohort to earn their degrees through the Promise program.
Special LACP medallions worn by students
The vibrant gradients in the LACP branding are offset by a generous use of negative space throughout all design materials.
Branded popup banners and t-shirts and dual-language trifold brochure
LACP Banners hanging outside the 2019 ceremonial graduation at CSULA
